There was a mutiny on the Spanish Ship “The Amistad” in which an African named Cinque led revolt which resulted in them gaining control of that ship. With no Spanish at their command they used the stars to guide them thinking they were heading back to Africa. Instead the Captain steered the ship east by day (while Cinque watched) and northwest by night, toward United States. when they arrived in New York just off Long Island the African’s were jailed and immediately argued (in their native tongue and drawing pictures and eventually through an African born English interpreter) that they were captured FREE MEN. Since the transatlantic slave trade had been abolished in 1807 the courts of 1839 were obliged to give them a trial.
John Quincy Adams argues to the United States Supreme Court that Cinque and his fellow Africans were free citizens of their native African country. He won and the Africans were set free immediately.
John Quincy Adams was played by Anthony Hopkins.
